Work cited page Research Paper Assignment Summer 2019 This assignment is intended to provide the student with an opportunity to learn and apply academic research strategies in an online setting. Each student will select a research topic that pertains to the field of study. After researching the selected topic, the student will write and submit a research paper that addresses a list of questions provided by the instructor. The paper submitted to the instructor will be assessed for competency in the areas of Critical Thinking, Communications, Empirical and Quantitative Skills. Teamwork will be assessed by the instructor based on participation in a Canvas- based discussion during the topic selection process. Specific details and guidelines are provided below. Research Topics The theme for this assignment is invasive species. An invasive species is one that has been introduced — often by humans — into a new environment, where it was not naturally found before. Each student will select an invasive species as the topic of a research paper, and post their selection in the Canvas discussion board. Each student must select a unique species; no duplicates are allowed. Each selection must be approved by the instructor; in the event that duplicates are posted, the instructor will only approve the first non-unique topic selection (students that selected duplicate topics will be required to submit a new topic). Once your topic is approved, you can begin researching the topic and writing your paper. Re-allocation of research topics is at the discretion of the instructor, but is extremely unlikely to occur in the absence of extraordinary circumstances. Guidelines The following items must be submitted to the instructor for completion of this assignment: 1. A topic selection post in the Research Paper Discussion Board in the Canvas classroom 2. An electronic copy of the Final Draft of your research paper (.doc or .docx format) 3. An electronic copy of the Works Cited in APA format in the paper (.doc or .docx format) Research Papers should include quantitative (numerical) and empirical (experimentally derived) data pertaining to the following information : 1. Physical description of species 2. Native habitat for species 3.
Natural prey or food source for species in its native habitat 4. Natural enemies of species in its native habitat 5. Where has the species been introduced? 6. How/why/when was the species introduced to the new habitat? 7. What are the special adaptations that the species has that make it successful in the introduced habitat? These could be physiological, genetic, behavioral etc. 8. What is the prey or food source for the species in the non-native habitat? 9. What are the natural enemies (including pathogens) or predators for the species in the non- native habitat? 10. How is the invasive species impacting the environment/ecosystem in the areas it has been introduced? 11. How is it affecting the human population in the introduced area? 12. Is the species endangering current native populations of species? If so which species and how? 13. How has the introduction of the species affected biodiversity in the new habitat? 14. What are the reproductive habits of the species? How does this impact their ability to adapt or control an invaded area? 15. What current measures are being used to keep the invasive species under control. 16. Interesting/fun facts about species.
