Islam and LGBT
Final Research Paper Students will engage in independent research on a topic (issue, phenomena, problem) of personal interest that intersects with the focus of the course The class explores the interdisciplinary perspectives on the formation of gender and place and its intersections with other relations of power, such as sexuality, race, class, empire, and ability. The class engages with materials from popular culture, media, fiction, film, and ethnography. Students are introduced to different examples of qualitative research methods and approaches to building more livable environments that promote social justice. Students will produce a research paper and a creative project that reflects feminist methods, interpretations, or analysis. Do research on is the persecution of the LGBT community in Muslim countries. Drawing examples from Malaysia and the Middle East, discuss the correlation between Islam and LGBTQ+ issues. LGBT in Islamic societies are faced with serious social and legal problems. The laws surrounding them differ in different countries, however, and is generally tolerated in modern Islamic societies.
