is it ethical to commodity human bodily products?
Length & Other Basics. This essay must be at least 1000 words long but should not exceed 1500. Write in formal English, follow my page layout criteria, cite all sources in MLA style, and craft an interesting title. Include a separate works-cited list, adapting your entries from those that I provide on Blackboard. Topic. Assume that the United States meets Hippen’s four conditions of “safety, transparency, institutional integrity, and respect for the rule of law” (58). Under these conditions, is it ethical to commodify human bodily products? • You may discuss cash, non-cash compensation, or both; you may cover living donors, deceased donors, or both. • Avoid arguing about hair, since it seems to excite no controversy. • The topic is not concerned with what the products are used for (transplantation, research, reproduction, artwork, whatever). You may make ethical arguments based on a hypothetical increase in saved lives, but you cannot argue that commodifying human body parts is ethical because it will save lives, since that is a different topic. Content. Successful papers need the following basic content and features: • a clear argumentative thesis statement with a forecasting statement • at least two affirmative body paragraphs that argue for your position without presenting opposing views (you may also add one or two mostly affirmative paragraphs that combine elements of counterargument) • an additional paragraph, a “Big Mac” counterargument that either concedes or refutes or both • as part of your evidence, introduced and cited direct quotations from at least three sources, as described here: —one reading from your textbook (the NKF, Becker and Elías, Posner, or Satel) —from my Blackboard posts, one trade/professional (***) item (Shapiro or “75% of Nephrologists . . .”) —one more textbook source or another Blackboard article (strong papers will use one of the scholarly sources) • a separate works-cited page; use Statsky as a sample (I provide partial entries for assigned and posted readings) Additional Information. Please note the following: • You may use additional sources, including your own research, as long as you properly document them. However, this assignment is explicitly designed to require no outside research. • This paper is a position; do not just explain, present evidence without arguing, or propose solutions to a problem. • You can earn an extra credit point if your works-cited list is absolutely perfect.
