Introducing school meals to public schools in Denmark
Paper details This is the final bachelor thesis for my course in Global Nutrition & Health with specialisation in public health – I would like a really good and thought out product. As of right now, I feel unable to meet the deadline set for the 17th of June. I have the guidelines, literature and a good idea of what methods to use, just putting it into writing is daunting and would really like some help. So far, the idea for the thesis is to change lawmakers and stakeholders in DK to include school meals and more cooking classes, much like the Swedish and English have improved eating habits for youth through their school program. Problem statement: Increased people diagnosed with diabetes type 2 increases the likelihood of future generations inheriting and increasing the risk of contracting t2d, also being exposed to higher sugar intake during developing years. An increasing number of people in Denmark is contracting Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD’s) such as type 2 Diabetes (T2D) due to poor dietary choice and lack of basic cooking skills. As seen in other countries a preventable measure is to teach basic cooking skills and food comprehension at an early age; increase awareness of eating habits within the school curriculum through an interdisciplinary approach. Research question: How can intervention mapping change current lawmakers to have the current public school curriculum to include healthy school meals, ultimately making a policy to prevent rising NCDs such as T2D in Denmark? The problem statement and research question is of course leading – having it related to legislative/policy action to decrease the risk of NCD’s by addressing youth is the main idea. The number of sources is not set, but there needs to be a literature review, where there’s enough of an argument to adopt school meals like in Britain/Sweden or other Nordic countries. I meet with my supervisor regularly, and was told to keep the following in mind: Don’t rely only on qualitative, but incorporate both quantitative and qualitative sources. Have relevant data/state of the art – > find a sensitive area, particular school/location, age group -> Then move forward Key information, triangulation of sources → sources that validate sources What exactly is the problem for the target group?
