Informative – Artificial intelligence
Heres is the thesis – As AI moves from science fiction to fact, it is important to understand exactly what it is and how it works. Have you ever asked yourself, “I wonder how THAT works?” That question is the theme for this speech. For this speech, select a topic that you know little about, but you believe is relevant to yourself and your audience (our class). The topic might relate to a device or form of technology (“this is how pictures are rendered digitally on a screen”), a process (“this is how the stock market functions”), acts of construction (“this is how to write a poem”), or other creative ideas. Try not to bite off more than you can chew – don’t attempt to explain something that would take two hours in only ten minutes. At the same time, make sure there is at least SOMETHING that needs to be explained. I WILL be taking the difficulty of the topic into account when grading. 1. Research the topic, consulting at least two sources of information. Be sure to utilize oral citations (“According to…”) in order to let the audience know where you are getting specific information. 2. Construct a 4-5 minute speech that explains “how it works.” Your focus should be on: a. Having a clear introduction (with all of the elements of an effective introduction as we’ve discussed them), as well as a focus on the importance and relevance of the topic. This requires a careful consideration of who your audience is. b. Maintaining careful organization of your major points within the speech. Make use of transitional words and phrases (“First,…,” “and then….,” etc.). c. Appropriate language use – be sure to explain any jargon or unfamiliar terms. Make sure your speech is accessible to your audience. d. Have a memorable conclusion that emphasis the importance of the topic (and, of course, restates your thesis and reviews your main points). 3. Practice your speech at least twice. 4. The use of visual or other speaking aids is not required but is encouraged. Make sure that you do not rely too much on visual aids, especially if you decide to use software such as PowerPoint. Less is more. 5. Complete a full-sentence outline for the speech. Grading emphasis will be on the thoughtful selection of an appropriate topic, the presence of basic research and oral citations, and the elements listed in part 2 above. A speech rubric will be provided. Your grade will be based upon the elements asked for, as well as the overall difficulty of the topic you have selected (think of it this way…”This is how my toaster works” will get you minimal points, but “This is how my health insurance works” will get you max).
