Tips for Writing a Good Essay 1. Topic Sentence a. The first sentence of each paragraph should be a topic sentence that summarizes the main topic of the following paragraph b. Once your draft is done, insert a topic sentence or rewrite the topic sentence of each paragraph c. The first sentence of each paragraph is the flow of narratives. Organize the sequence (or flow) of paragraphs according to the theme of each paragraph 2. First Paragraph a. It is the most important paragraph b. It should contain the topic of the paper, its significance and the plan of your narrative c. Try to write the first paragraph after your entire paragraph is done. d. First paragraph should be the last paragraph you work on before finalizing your paper 3. Core Argument a. You should be ready to state your core argument of the paper in one sentence, not two or three sentences. b. State your core argument in the first paragraph • Ask yourself this question: “What is the most important point I want to make in my paper?” c. And then try to state it in one sentence in the first paragraph d. State your argument again in the conclusion part, with different expressions or further implications e. Keep it in mind that without an argument, it’s not an academic paper 4. Editing, editing, and editing a. Finishing your draft is only a half-done work b. Spend about 30 to 40% of time to revise or rewrite (edit) your draft. c. Self-editing is one of the best ways to improve your writing skills d. Reading aloud of your each sentence can be helpful to clarify the meaning and the structure of each sentence For more details, check out the following site (there are some other useful guidelines on this Harvard Writing Center site. Cite as much sources as possible and cite the exact source clearly. One of the best and easiest ways of not committing plagiarism is to cite the sources of your information as clearly as possible. You will not be punished as you cited too many sources. 3. Use in-text & author-date style citations The Chicago Author-Date style requires the use of parenthetical references in the text of the essay as well as a list of citations on a “References” page at the end of a text. Page numbers should be included whenever possible. Examples: • (Smith 2015, 142) or if multiple authors (Smith and Johnson 2015, 14) • (New York Times, 2 June 2005, A2) • (Plagiarism and You 2002, 142) (“Five Ways to Protect Yourself” 2000, 33) • Electronic sources commonly lack a date of publication, as do other sources. When there is no date of publication listed for a source, include the abbreviation “n.d.” in place of the date. (Statistics for Water Rights n.d.) • For further information on citing sources using the Chicago style, http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html 4. List all the sources at the end of the paper as “references”. Books Welch, Kathleen E. 1999. Electric Rhetoric: Classical Rhetoric, Oralism, and a New Literacy. Cambridge: MIT Press. Journals Jobe, Karen D. 2000. “Women and the Language of Hackerdom: The Gendered Nature of Hacker Jargon.” Kairos 5, no. 2 (Fall), http://english.ttu.edu/kairos/5.2/binder.html?coverbweb/jobe/ women&hackerdom.htm. Magazines Swartz, Mimi. 2002. “An Enron Yard Sale.” New Yorker, May 6. Newspapers Lewin, Tamar. 2003. “Disability Requests Reflect Changes in SAT Procedure.” New York Times, November 8.
