Prompt: How did Native Americans during the Progressive Era attempt to “correct flaws” in US Indian policy and “to reform the public’s thinking about both Native cultures and Euro-American civilization?” (Hoxie 14). How successful were they in their efforts? Technical Requirements: The essay should be ~1250-1500 words (about 5-6 pages) All drafts must be typed and double spaced Use a standard 12 point font and 1” margins Required Guidelines: 1) You must include references from at least 6 different documents in Talking Back to Civilization. 2) The best essays will give a comprehensive assessment of the major themes of the book. 3) Use appropriate spelling, grammar and punctuation. Make sure to proofread your essay for clarity and style. Give yourself time to edit and to make revisions because strong historical writing requires revision! One thing you might want to try is to read the paper out loud to yourself because sometimes it’s easier to hear when sentences or phrases don’t sound right than to see it while reading. 4) The essay must have a thesis. Always include your thesis in the first paragraph. See the “Thesis Tip Sheet” on Canvas for more help with constructing a solid history thesis. 5) Use specific examples and quotes from Talking Back to Civilization to support your thesis. 6) Avoid block quotes (which are quotes longer than 3 lines). 7) You can use MLA or Chicago Style citations. 8) Here is some basic info about MLA style in-text citations: MLA format follows the author-page method of in-text citation. This means that the author’s last name and the page number(s) from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken must appear in the text. The author’s name may appear either in the sentence itself or in parentheses following the quotation or paraphrase, but the page number(s) should always appear in the parentheses, not in the text of your sentence.
