Historical theories of organizational development and leadership and management.

During this semester we have learned about various historical theories of organizational development and leadership and management. Some of these early theories continue to play a major role in how we view organizations. As we move into a more global world order, the outstanding question is whether early theories of organizational development, management and leadership are still valid. In addition to early theories that focused primarily on Western organizational structures, Adler, Hofstede, Global and other researchers have moved beyond the boundaries of the West to other parts of the world with a focus on cultures and decision-making of its leaders and characteristics of the organizations. The midterm assignment is for you to select two early experts on organizational development, management and leadership and discuss their theories then and now. The discussion should include a comparison of the research of Hofstede, Global, Adler and others who have examined the Eastern cultures and how these business practices, leadership and management skills and techniques compare to the Western experts. Purpose of Midterm The purpose of this assignment is to make sure that we indeed continue to link, history and theories of the past as we move forward in this global world order but also to make sure that we do not exclude the values and traditions of the East. Also, there are some who argue that globalization will not materialize and others argue that all business organizations are local and that expanding to a global marketplace is not necessary for a viable business. In this regard, after you have completed the above discussions and comparisons, your conclusion should be responsive to this broad issue. In short, as senior managers will you face a global marketplace and a world that is no longer “round”, or will you encounter a new form of economic/organizational isolationism?!!! Instructions This essay shall be no longer than 1500 words. This assignment is to comply with all of the requirements in the syllabus and the due date as set in the class schedule. However, for this assignment, it is your decision regarding the use of your writing coach. Friedman’s book on the “World is Flat” is another good source and this is discussed in Daft.
