Graham’s Detractors.
Reading Response: Graham’s Detractors. Read Alyssa Rosenberg’s essay in The Washington Post, “No, You Do Not Have to be Ashamed of Reading YA Fiction,” and, in two paragraphs totally approx 500 words, answer the following questions: 1. What are Rosenberg’s main issues with Graham’s argument? How, in particular, does Rosenberg broaden and critique Graham’s definition of “young adult fiction”? 2. Would you say Speak, especially when compared with “The Girl on the Plane” is better evidence for Graham’s argument, or Rosenberg’s? Whichever you choose, be sure to devote significant space in your answer for the counterargument. That is, if you think Speak is a rich, complex novel of the kind that Rosenberg says that YA books can be, then devote significant space to why other readers might think Speak is simplistic and too satisfying, before explaining why they’re wrong.
