Gender and religious dystopias.
After reading the Handmaid’s Tale, write a short essay discussing the issues that you are most drawn toward. Here are a few examples, but you can also create your own. (Please focus on gender and religious dystopia) “Nations never build apparently radical forms of government on foundations that aren’t there already” – Atwood “I made a rule for myself: I would not include anything that human beings had not already done in some other place or time, or for which the technology did not already exist.” – Atwood “Better never means better for everyone. It always means worse for some” – The Commander “A rat in a maze is free to go anywhere so long as it stays in the maze” – Offred “We gave you freedom from” – Aunt Lydia Offred’s tale as a survivor’s narrative. How do we receive her narrative? Why is this important? OR: Do some research on the three epigraphs located at the beginning of the novel (Bible passage, the excerpt from Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” and the Sufi proverb). Why do these three in particular frame the narrative? Do some research on the connections between the Female Underground Railroad and the Underground Railroad. What are their connections? OR: From the news: investigate current debates about female reproductive rights and abortion laws, in the US and/or elsewhere. Why are women’s bodies in the mire?
