Foreign Movie Analysis
One of the most enjoyable activities of this class is the movie analysis. You will choose a foreign movie that interests you and apply the concepts that you have learned from the class to what you see in the movie. While you can watch the movie at any time, please wait until you have read a majority of the material to write the analysis! After you have watched the movie, provide a brief synopsis of the movie (brief means 2 paragraphs or about half a page). Give me only enough detail to understand the plot of the movie and the main characters. ****** Be sure to talk about Hofstede’s value dimensions as it relates to the culture. ***** After reading chapter 6, you should have a good understanding of the value dimensions. Go to http://geert-hofstede.com/countries.html and research the culture of your film. Discuss how those values are illustrated in the movie. Give specific examples. You may also discuss other information from the textbook and your personal research that relates to you have seen in the movie. (i.e. use of language, nonverbals, direct vs. indirect communication, high context vs. low context, etc.)I am flexible on the film you choose – as long as it was produced in another country and it has English subtitles, then it will probably be acceptable. If you have questions, check the IMDB website for producer and production company. If you still have questions, check with me. You should be able to find a film on Amazon, Netflix, or in the MSU library, or even in your local public library. Also, check Hulu and Youtube for foreign films – you never know what you can find online for free! To get you started, here are a few lists from the Internet on the top foreign films!
