FDR Latin American program
FDR Latin American program
Paper details Paper 2 (Prompt) After the Great Depression, the US government recognized the excessive cost of its foreign policy. Military interventions, which increased in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, resulted costly for US treasury. Facing the economic burden that military intervetion represented and the challenges posed by international atmosphere of the interwar period (between WWI and WWII) President Franklin D. Roosevelt decided to drastically modify US foreign policy toward Latin America. Rather than alienating Latin American countries to US enemies, FDR implemented a “Good Neighbor Policy.” Under this new political strategy, US wanted to create a new political environment that would leave behind the image of an aggressive US. Produced in 1942, the film “Saludos Amigos” aimed to illustrate this new relationship. Sponsored by the US government, Walt Disney and his crew of caricaturists initiated a tour for Latin American countries to collect information about their people and culture. The objective of this enterprise was to create a movie that would portray US and Latin America’s new political relationship. “Saludos Amigos” portrayed US as the “good neighbor” willing to initiate a close friendship with the Latin America countries. Among the idealistic representations of Latin America people and culture, embodied by the different characters portrayed in the movie, these representations still contain elements that resonate with the traditional paternalistic view of US towards its new Latin American friends. Do you believe the movie successfully portrayed the new political program of FDR? Did the movie completely lack negative view/s of Latin American people and culture? How does the lack or presence of such negative views challenge the overall goal of the movie?
