Directions for your evaluation argument essay Basic guidelines Your essay must be written using Standard American English and MLA formatting (follow the example provided in “Writing Tips”). Your essay must be four-to-five pages long and must include an additional, separate Works Cited page. Your essay must be well-structured and easy to follow. Your audience o Educated Texas taxpayers Your purpose o Persuade your audience to change their minds about a controversial aspect of your subtopic or help your audience decide whether some aspect of your subtopic is worth their time or money. Your introductory paragraph must o Present and give necessary background information on an aspect of your subtopic o Show why evaluating that aspect of your subtopic is problematic or controversial o Present your evaluation claim and criteria— IMPORTANT: You must underline your claim, and your claim must include either the word best or the word worst. Each of the four or more body paragraphs should o State a specific criterion and explain why it is a necessary criterion o Show that the chosen aspect of your subtopic meets (or does not) meet that criterion o Summarize and respond to objections to the criterion Your three or more direct references to three or more sources should o Introduce the source (with attributive tags) o Quote or summarize the important information from that source o Explain the significance of the information from the source o Include a correct MLA in-text citation which is also referenced in the Works Cited page Your conclusion should o Sum up your paper. Do not simply repeat your introduction, and do not introduce new information. A final note This paper is not about you. It is about the issue your team has chosen to research this semester. Therefore, the following words and phrases are not acceptable in your essay: I, me, myself, we, us, in my opinion, I think, I believe, etc. Your paper is also not about your audience, and you do not know your reader personally; therefore, the following words are also not acceptable in your essay: you, your, you’re, yourself, etc. Teachers example: Subtopic- childhood obesity.
