Ethics in public safety

Ethics in public safety

General info for paper: -I am a police officer, and we are allowed to use discretion on most calls (aside from domestics and warrant arrests). Several times I have witnessed motor vehicle infractions, conducted a motor vehicle stop, and decided to give the person a verbal warning instead of a money citation based on their reasoning behind the infraction (elderly person on a fixed income, student late for school, someone on their way to church with baked goods ect….) I think this will be a good basis to write the paper on. Maybe include some stuff about community policing and about how we are here to help while still enforcing the law. I am easy going, fair, and find it easy to talk to people and de-escalate the situation in most cases. I’m not a “stereotypical a**hole” cop, and I try to give breaks to everyone that I can. I show everyone the same respect on the job that I would want another police officer to show my parents or family members if I was not around. Copy and pasted from instructor: Students will analyze a personal, ethical decision(s) that they made in a public safety environment. The essay as a whole should be a minimum of 8 pages (not including cover page or abstract) in length and address the areas that are listed below. It is critical that you address all areas. This paper must be written using proper APA style with regards to format, quotes and references and should be divided into clearly identified sections. These sections are: 1. Personality Traits: These will come as students take the various personality tests and then interprets them into their own personal lives. Students should assess their own background and evaluate how their personality traits affect their decision-making mechanisms. Students should also look at how Significant Emotional Events have shaped their decision-making processes. 2. Ethics Methodology—Students need to familiarize themselves the traditional theories of ethics and decision-making. Then they need to assess their own way they make decisions. They should reflect on their approach as being deontological (principles based); teleological (results based); or developmental (Kohlberg’s moral approach). 3. Choose a Real Life Ethical Case Study from current events Describe the setting, the decision option, and your decision 4. Revisit the Case—Now that you have had this course, evaluate if you would have changed anything. Explain your decision to or not to change based upon your more thorough knowledge of your personal ethics. 5. Define the Application of your ethics to your life—reflect upon the principles, values, and ethical standards that direct your life. Important concept in this exercise is the presentation of Cognitive Moral Development by Lawrence Kohlberg and his discussion of the stages of ethical development.
