Ethics for Professionals as Mandatory Reporters
Objective: Applying a conflict resolution strategy to a common situation faced by helping professionals, either in the role as mandatory reporters, Adult Protective Services (APS), and other specialists whose role is to address needs for frail and declining older adults and their families. First, prepare for this activity. Read: Barsky, A. (2008). A Conflict Resolution Approach to Teaching Ethical Decision Making: Bridging Conflicting Values. Journal of Jewish Communal Service 83(2/3), 164-169). Initial post: Imagine you are the APS worker for the scenario in “A Family’s Dilemma”. (Read the case and roles, below.) Write an initial post that identifies 2 value/ethics issues for this family meeting. Apply the first conflict resolution model from the article cited above, then attempt to sort out the conflict. Analyze how you might help the family combine their agendas and propose a solution for Mary’s situation that might result in mutual gain for all OR, If you cannot identify a potential solution, list other information you recommend would be helpful to gather in order make a professional and values driven recommendation.
