Today – Fruit Fly Set-up:
Each group will set up 2 vials with breeding fruit flies; these flies will constitute our breeding population for our population genetics experiment.
Fruit Fly Genetics
We will only look at one trait: eye color
Wild type eyes (red, R) are dominant to sepia eyes (brown, r)
Our experiment begins with the F1 generation:
RR x rr = Rr
Our F1 flies (Rr) will all have red eyes
Setting up the vials
Each group will set up two vials, each with a minimum of 5 females and 5 males
Start by placing FlyNap wands in stock cultures; prepare new vials:
– Add equal amounts of media and water to bottom of each vial
– Add a few granules of yeast to each vial
– Prepare labels for vials
Sort adult flies into males and females
• Add equal numbers of males and females to each vial (minimum 5 each); cap vials and place into incubator
