Dual Language Programs Discussion Board 1
Review the article, Early Literacy Instruction in Dual Language Preschools (English/Spanish). http://www.colorincolorado.org/article/early-literacy-instruction-dual-language-preschools-spanishenglish Under the heading, Developing Foundational Reading Skills in English and Spanish, consider the subsection on Differences: English and Spanish. Please note that the following English sounds and patterns do not occur in Spanish: The consonant sounds /j/, /r/, /v/, /z/ The digraph /sh/ The “schwa” sound /ə/ Initial consonant blends that begin with s (e.g., ship) Final consonant blends and digraphs (e.g., best, with) The lax, or “short,” sounds of the vowels a, i, and u Based on your understanding of these from reading chapters 1-3 (Moats, 2010), which do you think would be most difficult for a native Spanish speak to learn in English? Why? What is an example of a word that follows the sound/s or pattern you have chosen? What do you think makes the sound/s or pattern difficult to learn? How would you try to make learning the sound/s or pattern easier for a Spanish speaking student learning English (other sections of the article may assist you with answering this one)? For this discussion board: Create a thread and answer and reflect on the above questions/prompts in your post. Your answer and reflection should contain paraphrases, quotes, and summaries from the readings to support your post. When applicable, include proper APA Citations for all paraphrases, quotes and summaries.
