Here is a website that may also help that provides MANY more terms including categories related to sex, gender,, sexual identity, and gender identity: https://www.itspronouncedmetrosexual.com/2013/01/a-comprehensive-list-of-lgbtq-term-definitions/ (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. 1. Briefly discuss the difference between sex, gender, sexual identity, and gender identity in your own words (but based on the definitions in the text). As you do so, briefly explain what is meant by the contention that gender is “socially constructed”. 2. Name and briefly discuss one area in our culture where there is still a disparity between men and women and whether our increasing androgyny in gender roles will help diminish that difference. Speaking of androgyny and shifting perspectives, do you think that there is a “new sexual double standard” in our culture where objectifying women is now off limits while objectification of men is okay (think about “masculinity” and “femininity” as discussed in the chapter as well as he first clip above. 3. Sexual orientation is another polarizing issue in our society. Even though many are more tolerant, and/or also more accepting of the diversity of sexual orientation, gay and lesbian youth in particular, (not to mention youth AND adults in other categories within LGBTQ+) frequently face discrimination from both their peers and their families. Discuss what rituals, traditions, and customs/beliefs (this could include certain events that happen in high school, sports, etc.) promote heteronomativity (focus on cisnormativity – the assumption that everyone is and/or should be cisgender/heterosexual or a focus on heterosexuality being the only standard, while marginalizing those that are not in this category) in high schools in our society. To add, do you think that a large proportion of the intolerance and even hate crimes are attributable to so many not having an understanding of how sexual and gender identities are defined? Please discuss this objectively using SCHOLARLY engagement. 1.
