DECLARATION: SOCIAL JUSTICE, SELF-SYSTEMS, AND ENGAGEMENT IN LEARNING PRESENTATION
First, read Mirci, P., Loomis, C., & Hensley, P. (2011). “Social Justice, Self-Systems, and Engagement in Learning: What Students Labeled as At-Risk Can Teach Us.” Then, create a Prezi, of between seven to ten frames capturing the meaning of the reading related to the categories comprising the self-system; the legacies of eugenics, intelligence testing, and standardized testing as reflecting and shaping beliefs about students on the basis of race and social class; internalization of culture; and impact of teacher beliefs on students’ self-beliefs (i.e., identity or self-system). Arrange to present your Prezi to someone who is not taking our class. Engage in a discussion seeking to gain descriptions related to the substance of the meaning provided in your presentation rather than the tendency to talk about liking or disliking the presentation; strive to elicit the “why” of the person’s reactions (both thoughts and feelings). Write a one to two page response to the reactions based on what you have learned thus far in the course, and submit the paper for feedback.
