Death of a Salesman xerox
Review the green Death of a Salesman xerox (also on Moodle under course handouts). Review the definition of foil characters on pg 1038. Compare the following pairs of characters’ values (what is important to them) and views towards the American Dream and how to achieve success: * Write half a page on how Ben’s values and views are foils to Willy’s. * Write half a page on how Charlie’s values and views are foils to Willy’s. * Write a page on Bernard’s values and views are foils to Biff’s. * Write a page on Happy’s values and views are foils to Biff’s. * Write a page on Willy’s and Biff’s relationship (not as foils to each other, but focusing on their relationship and how the values and views on the above are different). Then watch the following, on reserve in the library under ENG 105/Bliss: Death of a Salesman PS3525.I5156 D4 2002 DVD (1985 Dustin Hoffman production) Start with the chapter titled “Planting a Garden” and watch through to the end. Alternately, watch the scene at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1lazBK1Pec Then write half a page to a page in which you discuss what realization Biff has in this scene, as well as what Willy realizes. What does Willy decide to do after Biff leaves the room and why? Review Miller’s essay “Tragedy and the Common Man” and write a page in which you apply Miller’s ideas to Willy Loman–why does Miller believe that Willy’s experiences, situation, and actions in the play makes him worthy of being a tragic hero. Do you agree?
