Cultural transitions and Renaissance Humanism
Discuss about the connections between modern views of the Humanities and Humanism in the Renaissance. To prepare for this discussion, read chapters 15 and 16 carefully and consider which example of literature, art, and architecture inform on the following questions: To what extent does the study of modern humanities owe a debt to Renaissance Humanism? How do developments in the High Middle Ages (transitional period to the Renaissance, CH15) begin to show divergence from Medieval ideals and the emergence of individualism and human potential? Choose a total of three examples from the writings and from the art/architecture in Chapters 15 and 16 (1 literature + 2 images or 2 literature + 1 image)* Citing relevant parts from your literature choices directly and describing particular aspects of your art choices, identify how they reflect the changes noted in the above questions in culture from the High Middle Ages to the height of Renaissance Humanism. Why are Literature, Art, and Architecture from the Renaissance so significant for the study of Humanities in the modern context? All responses must make a clear contribution to the discussion. Simply agree, complementing, acknowledging or restating, and/or expressing admiration will warrant very low scores.
