Critically analyse the usefulness of falls risk assessment tools preventing hospital in-patients’ falls prevention
Falls are a major cause of disability and the leading cause of mortality due to injury in older people aged over 75. In the United Kingdom, for example, 14,000 elderly people a year die as a result of an osteoporotic hip fracture, resulting in an annual cost to the NHS of around £1.7 billion. Of this, 45% of the cost is for acute care, 50% for social care and long term hospitalisation and 5% for drugs and follow up. (a) Critically analyse the usefulness of falls risk assessment tools preventing hospital in-patients’ falls preventions (e.g. read https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3805440/ ); (b) Describe (with appropriate references) 5 factors which you believe may be associated with risk of in-patient falls in hospitals and rank them in relation to frequency and (potential) consequences in UAE hospital settings ; (c) Outline an approach (e.g. see: https://www.yeovilhospital.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Prevention-and-Management-of-In-Patient-Falls-Policy_March-2014.pdf ; https://www.jointcommission.org/assets/1/18/SEA_55.pdf) for preventing in-patient falls in UAE healthcare settings. Include references to the roles technology may play in preventing in-patient falls in healthcare settings, e.g. read https://reader.elsevier.com/reader/sd/pii/S1532046415002932?token=97C287A3E81EDCC5FD6ED7F41D9723CBC5DF0726098E96E2103B71ADCCFE874488D32797D07768C995AA972FA760B12B ) – 8 marks
