Critical discussion : Becker (1963)
Pick any tutorial topic and 2 readings on that topic to critically discuss. Please use the set readings for the tutorials. Also please use academic sources, so no reports or newspaper articles – stick to journal articles and book chapters. Please make sure that your first assignment for CRIM 322 does the following; -References in APA style – please include a references list with the two readings in APA referencing style (see https://apastyle.apa.org/ and guide on BB) -Is well set out and easy to read and mark; 1.5 spacing, .11 font (minimum) with a normal margin either side. – Is written in essay prose, discursive style, so no bullet points, lists and so on. -Does more than descriptively list the points contained in the readings. ‘Critical discussion’ of academic sources is more than describing what is in them – critical discussion means you need to develop a logical argument around the points you are making, demonstrating that you understand what you have read. You need to show your reader that you understand the arguments in your two chosen readings – show why the points you are raising are important and link them to each other. Change this While many see this as a significant oversight of labelling theory, advocates argue that it was never their intention to provide an explanation for primary deviance. Labelling theorists such as Becker (1963) would argue that they were interested in exploring the social construction of crime and how this is related to arguments regarding power and the labels that were imposed on given behaviour. Labelling theory is also criticised because… -Avoids subheadings – they are not necessary in a short assignment of this nature. You may choose to discuss each reading separately, then have a part of your discussion where you integrate some of the arguments. Alternatively, you may choose to discuss the two readings together all the way through your assignment. It is up to you which format you choose, as long as your discussion is presented as per the above guidelines (and you are not limited to these two examples, you can choose to do it differently). You don’t have to reference more than the two readings, but if you can or want to relate the discussion to wider material and have the room in your word count to do this then you will need to reference everything throughout your assignment and in your references list. Although, please note that the assignment will be assessed on content so don’t add in extra material at the expense of discussing the arguments contained in your two chosen articles. Also this assignment has a limited word count so don’t waste words on lengthy introductions and conclusions – focus on your critical discussion of the content of your chosen articles (as well as on proper presentation as noted on the previous page.
