Criminal Intelligence
Read each questions requirements carefully and responses should be 300 to 350 words in length and demonstrate a solid understanding of the material at hand and a comprehension of the reading material. Any sources used in the generation of your post(s) shall be acknowledged through the use of properly formatted in-text citations and properly formatted end-of-work references. ***Question 1: Chapter 4 of your textbook discusses the intelligence cycle for state, local, and tribal law enforcement. This intelligence cycle consists of six basic components: -Planning and direction -Collection -Processing/collation -Analysis -Dissemination -Reevaluation Take a few moments to examine this process in a critical manner. Identify what you believe is the most important step in the intelligence analysis process and provide justification as to your selection. -What makes the step you have identified more important than the others? -Can the most important component of the intelligence analysis process change depending on target or objectives? -If one of the steps of the intelligence analysis process were eliminated, which one do you think would be the ‘weakest link’ and have the least impact on the overall process if it were to be eliminated? ***Question 2: Please take a few moments to review the text book information (in Chapter 5) regarding the comparison(s) between Intelligence Led Policing and Community Policing. Once you have reviewed this information, answer the following prompts: -In your words, what are the primary differences between these two concepts? -What is one strength of Community Policing? -What is one weakness of Community Policing? -Conversely, what is one strength of Intelligence Led Policing? -What is one weakness of Intelligence Led Policing? Given the increased scrutiny on law enforcement to become more aware and capable of identifying, investigating, and possibly disrupting terrorist attacks, will the need for Intelligence Led Policing capabilities replace the Community Policing foundations that exist in many municipal law enforcement agencies? -Is the concept of Community Policing outdated and obsolete? Why or why not? ***Question 3: On page 69 of your text book, Carter (2009) writes: “An intelligence product has virtually no value unless the system is able to get the right information to the right people at time frame provides value to the report’s content. Dissemination – or information sharing – seeks to accomplish this goal.” Take a few moments to examine the process of disseminating finished intelligence to a variety of consumers. As you consider this process, remember there is often a need to restrict information dissemination and narrow the scope of people who have access to finished products. This concept, commonly referred to as “right to know and need to know” is a fundamental component of the intelligence community and serves as a means to protect information of all classification levels. As you examine the concept of restricted dissemination, answer the following questions. What determines who needs to know and has a right to know specific information? Are there any risks of restricting intelligence dissemination and, if so, what are they? Are there any risks in allowing widespread access to intelligence and, if so, what are they?
