COPD diagnosis

Using your textbook as a guide, discuss how you would promote effective communication in the following situation: The BSN prepared nurse has been placed in charge of managing the care of patient with COPD. Your patient is a 65-year-old male who was recently diagnosed with COPD and is now being discharged from the hospital. It is your job to provide education on the disease process and how to prevent rehospitalizations. The patient’s wife and three adult children are present for the teaching, but do not all agree on the recommendations offered. The wife wants her husband to do as he wishes, but the children say their father should follow all recommendations. The patient is currently a one-pack per day cigarette smoker and refuses to stop smoking. Discuss approaches to communication with this patient and family that could lead to successful teaching.
