Readings in Social Theory. McGraw-Hill. Instructions: Do not closely paraphrase or quote. In other words, answer questions entirely in your own words, but you are expected to cite and reference course readings to support the information and content of your writing. ESSAY QUESTIONS – Part I: Short Answer Questions. (Up to 1 double-spaced page per question) 1. Define and explain the three types or styles of theorizing according to Seidman. 2. Explain the similarities and differences between Weber’s “iron cage” and Marx’s notion of “alienation” of the proletariat. 3. Define and explain the two aspects of the Self according to Mead’s Symbolic Interactionism Theory. Part II: Short Essay. Approximately 2 double-spaced pages. 4. Compare and contrast any two theories of the following classical sociological theorists except the combination of Marx and Weber – Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, W.E.B. Dubois. In your short answer essay, be sure to: Mention a major assumption/key tenet and a major concept of each theory. Explain a point of similarity and a point of contrast between each theory. Cite Seidman and/or Farganis. Provide an example from a relevant required class video or relevant example from the discussion board dialogue.
