Five-page community profile/ethnography paper. The five pages do not include the cover page, bibliography, or the required questionnaire. The paper must have three high-quality sources (peer-reviewed, from library database—only one direct web-based sources is allowed), which are related to the focus or theme of your paper. The word “community” refers here to a specific majority African American neighborhood (or relationship with another community), or barrio, a barbershop, beauty salon, food market, a community center, museum, a church community, the projects, and many other possibilities. Emerge themes like housing, religion, race, culture, crime, education, pride, gender, sexuality, community relations, social justice, activism, class, or environment. Include such things as published statistics or charts if obviously relevant to your topic (for example, demographic trends or crime statistics).

 

Format of Paper: double spaced in 12 pt. Times New Roman in APA style (which is required by the college), with one-inch margins on each side and no extra spaces between paragraphs.

Outline of the Paper

Write a very brief introduction stating what this paper is, what your community is, how you collected your data, with whom, when, where (place), pertinent information about your interviewee, how the paper is organized.

3.      
Data and examples reflect (does not have to say it literally) why this paper is important to the overall discussion of Africana Communities: Use about one and a half pages to give a detailed summary of the community. Use sources and theoretical principles to introduce your topic.

4.      
Provide the “what” first—paint a picture: Write a detailed account/description of the place, its mission or purpose and your observations, including names (including short interviews interviewee’s profession and expertise related to the course), specific times and circumstances at the times of your observations, etc.

5.      
 Identify and analyze main theme and subthemes that emerge from your observations. Include comparisons to broader contexts, for example: statistics on what men say in black barbershops.

6.      
Always keep in mind the essential “spirit” of the course Africana culture/social justice.  This paper must be original to this course and this semester. Always cite your sources. Include Works Cited page when citing concepts from the course (check APA style).

7.      
Your conclusion should recognize that five pages cannot cover everything. In the conclusion recap main points and suggest ways to further the discussion.
