Common art-historical approaches – visual analysis and visual comparison

For this paper, you will utilize two common art-historical approaches – visual analysis and visual comparison – to observe, analyze, and articulate specific differences in the form, iconography, and style of two works of art. One of these pieces must currently be on display at a local museum. The other you will find in your textbook or by searching through the collections of major museums online (the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Freer/Sackler Gallery, etc). You may also choose to analyze both works in person. Then choose any two works of art from South Asia, Southeast Asia, China, Korea, or Japan that were made prior to 1900. It is advised to choose objects similar to one another in at least one aspect­ – subject matter, material, time period, culture, theme, etc. Prior to your visit, you can search the collection online and find background information.
