“college for all”
The format of the panel discussion is such that each speaker receives around 5 minutes to describe his or her stance the topic (“college for all”). Understandably, the bigshots go first because they’re the most established (plus the packed crowd is mainly here to see them). Being the youngest and least known person on the panel, you are last. One of those bigshots, Charles Murray, offers remarks identical to what he argued back in 2008 in the essay, “Are Too Many People Going to College?” Another bigshot, Sanford Ungar, also sees no reason to change his mind, and rehashes his 2010 article, “The New Liberal Arts.” Hearing Murray and Ungar stick so closely to their previously published arguments, you can barely wait to speak. You’ve been thinking about these arguments for a while. Task Write out a brief speech (around 500 words) declaring your position on this topic—“college for all”—with a special focus on responding to Murray and Ungar’s earlier remarks. Be aware that several panelists have spoken since Murray and Ungar and that the audience may not remember what they said. While you have strong, complicated feelings on the matter, it’s important that you come across as polite, informed, and credible
