Budgeting for Clinical Research Contributing to the development of a budget for a clinical research grant application is an essential role of the CRA. This week, you will marshal the information you gave, garnered from your weekly reading, the course media, and the websites you reviewed, to develop a budget proposal outline in response to a request for application (RFA) from the NIH. To prepare for this Application Assignment, pay particular attention to the following Learning Resources from this week: Chapter 33, “Evaluating a Protocol Budget” in Gallin and Ognibene “An Introduction to Clinical Trial Budgeting and Negotiating” by Stoller “Managing Clinical Trials—Frustrations or Bliss?” by Willenberg. Review “Table 1. Budget Builder” in this article Next, search the NIH Office of Extramural Research website http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/search_results.htm?year=active&scope=rfa and select an RFA of particular interest to you from the list of all active RFAs. To complete this Application Assignment, write a 2- to 3-page paper in which you develop a budget proposal outline for the RFA that you have selected. A template is provided below for your convenience. You may create your own template as long as all of the required information is present. Include the following elements: Title and number of the RFA selected A paragraph in which you summarize the purpose of the RFA A paragraph in which you explain why you selected this particular RFA The total dollar amount and time period for the budget Budget categories (Be sure to include categories for the personnel, services, supplies, data capturing mechanism, and the facilities that are necessary. Include additional categories that are appropriate for the specific RFA if necessary.) Estimated dollar values for each category (Provide a brief description of each of the budgetary categories you have included for the trial.) Description of the category (Describe the various cost elements that make up the category and how the category relates to the success of the research specified in the RFA.) Indirect costs not covered by the RFA (Describe any other operational cost elements that your site might have that would be considered indirect costs and therefore not covered by the RFA budget.)
