Book Review on Achebe’s Things Fall Apart
3. Book Reviews (submit to the appropriate folder in the Assignment Box): • To develop/refine critical thinking, analytic and writing skills, you will be required to write a two-page review of Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Du Bois’ The Souls of Black Folk. You will be penalized for having less than or exceeding 2 pages. • Each book review essay must include the following: o Your name, Course Number and Section (AFAS 160A1: 001), and Date on the top, left hand corner of your first page. This becomes your header. Any essay missing the writer’s name (student’s name) will be rejected and deemed a missed assignment. o The title of your review essay should be: the author’s last name followed by a comma, the author’s first name followed by a colon (:) and title of the reading reviewed (e.g., Achebe, Chinua: Things Fall Apart). This title should then be underlined. o You may also move the two items above to a title page. The title page formatted this way will not count toward the page requirement. o Essay must be saved and submitted as a Microsoft Word Document. Essay submitted in any other format such as pdf, rtf, .Pages and others will not be evaluated. • In these reviews, you are expected to demonstrate a clear understanding of the issues raised in the readings (as they relate to the content of this course) and to actively engage them with a critical mind. • Refer to the book/article review guidelines on the Content page on D2L (under the Course Syllabus and Guidelines Module). • These book reviews are due in their respective folders on the ASSIGNMENT BOX no later than 9:00 PM (Arizona Time) on the Thursday of the week that the readings are scheduled for discussion. September 19 for Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and October 31 for Du Bois’ The Souls of Black Folk. Each review is worth 15 points (15% of final grade). You will not get credit for any of these assignments submitted out of order or submitted to the wrong forum. • Submit your essay to the Assignment folder for the assignment by uploading your file. Do not paste your essay onto the clipboard of the ASSIGNMENT folder. Essays that are pasted will be deleted and you will lose credit on the assignment. • Double-check your submission to make sure you submitted the correct file and a complete essay. If you found out before the deadline that you submitted the wrong file, you may resubmit the correct file. However, this substitution must be effected before the deadline. No substitution will be allowed after the deadline for each assignment. Be diligent! Where you have submitted more than one file, the last file uploaded will be deemed the file to grade. • Avoid the temptation of plagiarizing the myriad of online sources (e.g., Wikipedia, Sparknotes, etc.). Be warned also that I have an archive of past essays on this assignment for the past 12 years. You will lose credit on any plagiarized (score of a zero). In addition, the student will be referred to the Office of the Dean of Students for additional sanctions. • Do not wait till the last hour or worse, the last minute before you attempt posting your book review essay. Think of the consequences for a missed assignment: lower grade, lower GPA, missed scholarships, academic probation, etc. Blame no one but yourself if you are unable to post at the last hour or last minute for whatever reasons. • Double-check your posting in the ASSIGNMENT Box to make sure your essay went through. If it is not posted to the Assignment Box, then members of the teaching team will not be able to grade your assignment. It is advisable that you complete your assignment and submit it a few hours before the deadline. This way, you will have enough time to take care of any challenges you may encounter in the process of submitting your work. • Do not email me (after an assignment deadline) to complain that you could not find your essay in the ASSIGNMENT folder after you posted it before the deadline. You must complete the task of posting your assignment before the deadline and confirm immediately after posting that it is there before the deadline. Do this before you exit the course site. • Do not bring your laptops to me to show me your essay as a proof that you completed the assignment. Your assignment must be posted to the appropriate forum before it can be accepted.
