Black Mirror and Social Media
Topic will be Black Mirror and Social Media The Black Mirror episode “Nosedive” and have focused on examining how technology and social media are changing the way we communicate and seek validation from others. The articles(i provide the sources at the bottom ) that have analyzed the relationship between social validation and brain chemistry (Rock)and how technology has encouraged us to have less meaningful interactions with others (Turkle). Friedersdorfcontends that social media is actually altering the ways that we construct identity and group membership, as alack of digital privacy collapses our different social spheres. Each of these authors posit clear arguments that technology is causing a fundamental shift in how we understand what it means to identify with others and how we use these social interactions to construct our own identities and self-worth.In this essay, I would like you to continue this research by choosing a form of media (i.e. Black Mirror“Nosedive,” a different show, movie, video game, etc) and analyzing the ways that this media example is interrogating a social or technological issue. You’re working on a difficult task here– you’re bridging a scholarly analysis of your chosen social/technological issue with a visual analysis of a piece of popular culture. This prompt is very open ended because I want you to choose an issue and media example that you find interesting and compelling. Some potential topics you could consider (please do not try to address all of these in your paper):●In what ways does the Black Mirror episode “Nosedive” examine a growing societal fear that technology is fundamentally changing the ways that we communicate and form relationships?●What does the Black Mirror episode “Nosedive” show us about the ways that social norms and behaviors are policed? If we understand their ranking app to represent societal expectations, how do the characters in the show both conform to and rebel against these expected behaviors and norms? What are the consequences for this rebellion? ●In what ways does the show “Rick and Morty” provide a nihilistic view of technology and the future?Rick breaks rules across time and space, often with catastrophic consequences– how do his actions represent fears about the intersection of morality and technology development?Because you are proposing your own topic for this paper, you may need to do some outside research. You are welcome to use the sources we read in class, but you may need to find sources of your own. If you are unsure if a source is credible, feel free to email it to me so I can check! Use of at least 4 sources (one of which should be your media example) I will provide three source for you 1.https://hbr.org/2012/05/your-brain-on-facebook 2.https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/01/outrage/579553/ 3.https://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/27/opinion/sunday/stop-googling-lets-talk.html
