Applying Theory to Behavior
Assignment 1–Applying Theory to Behavior After watching Wall Street, which of the three theories – Differential Association, Social Learning (also included ‘Neutralization Techniques’, in chapter 5), or Strain – do you find most applicable to the demise of Charlie Sheen’s character Bud Fox? In a 3-5 page paper (double-spaced), make a cogent argument explaining the rationale for your preferred theory and why the other two theories fall short. My suggestion is you spend about the first two-thirds of the paper making your argument for your preferred theory and follow that up with a critique of the other two theories by being very specific. Note: the paper should be written in a way that assumes the reader has never watched the film nor is cognizant of any of the criminological theories covered in class. That is, write the essay that: (1) defines each theory before discussing how it applies; (2) write it in a way that anyone can understand the main tenets of each theory in a succinct way; and (3) first describe the film briefly before you apply any theory to it. This assignment is due on Canvas (via Turnitin) by Sunday, June 30. Late papers will be accepted with a 5-point deduction for every day it is late.
