Anna Kingsley Life Reflection Paper
You have read the biography of Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley, an African woman who ultimately became owner of a Florida plantation. In many ways, Kingsley’s life offers a window for understanding the changing nature of society in Florida between the so-called “Second Spanish Period” (1783-1821) and the coming of the American Civil War in 1861. Reflecting on Kingsley’s life, you are to write a brief essay (800-1000 words) that responds to the following question: Imagine you are an enslaved person of African descent born in Spanish East Florida in 1790 who lived to be 100 years old and died in 1890. Describe how your life would have changed over those years. What major historical turning points would have shaped your life? In what ways? As you construct your essay, you should begin with a thesis statement that clearly states your argument about the turning points your character’s life. You should then structure your biography using evidence drawn from the book and other course materials. You should cite all quotations/evidence with parenthetical documentation of the page numbers from which they come.
