Analytical essay about a man’s fall from grace; using the characters from Lord of the Flies.
Lord of the Flies For this essay, I want you to write an analytical essay about man’s fall from grace, using the characters in Lord of the Flies. The underlying theme of this essay should be that humans can be inherently evil, given the right circumstances. In this essay, you will focus special attention on the characters of Ralph, Jack, Simon, and Piggy. Special emphasis will be given to Ralph because he is the one who “falls from grace” the most. He starts off as a “good boy” from a military background. He wants to establish order on the island, but over time, the whole situation devolves into a “zombie” type mess. One of the best ways to “attack” an analytical essay like this is to write about the events in the book chronologically. I DO NOT want a summary. I want you to present events as they happen and then tie them back to your overall thesis about how easy it is for humans to turn evil. Or if you want to make a bolder statement, you could actually say that humans are evil. In the intro paragraph, you will write a 5 to 6 sentence synopsis of the book. Include the name of the author, the title of the book, and a quick description of what happens, and then your thesis statement relating to evil. The first body paragraph should focus on Ralph on the beach, and how he meets Piggy on the beach and their interactions. As you write about the events and the boys, you’ll also want to focus on important symbols that come up, such as Piggy’s glasses, the fire, and Lord of the Flies–the beast in all of us. Remember to use useful quotes from the book and not to include too information at once. One paragraph equals one main thought. As you write about the events, pay special attention to how Ralph’s character changes throughout the book. He is really the key to this whole essay, although it’s also important to write about the other items I’ve mentioned. Total page length should be at least 4 to 5 full pages. A more detailed outline: 0. IN THE INTRO PARGRAPH, INTRODUCE THE BOOK AND WHAT IT’S ABOUT. ESSENTIALLY IT’S A BOOK ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A GROUP OF YOUNG BOYS LAND ON A DESERTED ISAND AND WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM–WHETHER THEY WORK COOPERATIVELY TOGETHER OR WHETHER THEY TURN LIKE VICIOUS ANIMALS. THE THEME OF THE BOOK, WHICH YOU’LL WANT TO MENTION IN THE INTRO IS THAT INITIALLY THE BOYS START OFF WELL MEANING, BUT THEY FALL FROM GRACE AND TURN INTO SAVAGES. SO, ONE THEME COULD BE IS THAT MAN IS INHRENTLY EVIL AND THAT IT JUST TAKES THE RIGHT (OR WRONG) CIRCUMSTANCES TO BRING MAN’S INHERENT NATURE OUT IN HIM. EACH PARAGRAPH THAT FOLLOWS SOMEHOW NEEDS TO RELATE BACK TO THE MAIN THEME. THE FOLLOWIN ARE THE EXAMPLES I WOULD USE FROM THE BOOK TO DISCUSS AND EXPLORE THE MAIN THEME: PARAGRAPH ONE: RALPH AND PIGGY MEET. RALPH IS BASICALLY GOOD BUT THERE ARE TRACES OF EVIL IN HIM EVEN WHEN HE BREAKS PIGGY’S TRUST BY TELLING THE OTHER BOYS PIGGY’S REAL NAME. 2. THEY DISCOVER THE CONCH. DISCUSS WHAT THAT SYMBOLIZES 3. JACK SHOWS UP WITH THE CHOIR AND THEY DISCUSS THE IMPORTANCE OF BUILDING A FIRE AND ALSO HUNTING FOR MEAT. ONE ACTIVITY REPRESENTS BEING SAVED. THE OTHER SAVAGERY4. 4.IT’S NOT EASY TO HUNT FOR MEAT. THE BOYS AREN’T USED TO KILLING, SO THEY START PAINTING THEIR FACES SO THEY DON’T QUITE LOOK LIKE THEMSELVES 5. ONCE THEY KILL THE PIG, THEY BECOME BOLDER AND MEANER TO EACH OTHER. 6. ORDRER STARTS TO FALL APART. JACK SPLITS FROM THE GROUP. HE STEALS PIGGY’S GLASSES. THAT’S A SIGN THAT THEIR CIVILIZATION IS FALLING APART. 7. SIMON GOES OFF BY HIMSELF AND FINDS OUT WHO THE BEAST REALLY IS—THE BOYS THEMSELVES 8. THEY KILL SIMON. DISCUSS WHAT THIS MEANS. 9. THEY KILL PIGGY. DISCUSS WHAT THIS MEANS. ALL ORDER IS GONE NOW. 10. THEY LIGHT THE ISLAND ON FIRE. IRONICALLY, IT IS THEIR DESTRUCTIVE URGE TO BURN THE WHOLE ISLAND DOWN THAT BRINGS RESCUE TO THEM. WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN? PLEASE WRITE ABOUT THIS ESSAY IN THAT ORDER. INCLUDE SUMMARY, BACKGROUND AND IMAGINE THE READER OF YOUR ESSAY HAS NOT READ THE BOOK. AS YOU WRITE, TIE EACH AND EVERY SCENE BACK TO THE MAIN THEME ABOUT HOW EASY IT IS FOR MAN TO FALL FROM GRACE. TRY ALSO TO WRITE IN SHORT, EASY TO UNDERSTAND SENTENCES. ALSO, IT WOULD HELP YOU TO REREAD THE BOOK AND WHEN YOU DO TURN IN THE ESSAY, TRY TO READ IT OUT LOUD TO SOMEONE ELSE. THE READING OUT LOUD SHOULD HELP YOU UNDERSTAND IF THE ESSAY MAKES SENSE OR NOT.
