Africology 565: Raising Children, Race-ing Children
ASSIGNMENT Essay Question: There is a debate about whether the media children consume reinforce or challenge racial stereotypes. While some argue that racial stereotypes permeate and dominate the media, others argue that newer media challenge traditional racial images. This essay asks you to use one or more specific pieces of children’s media to conduct a case study on this issue. Using a specific piece of media consumed by children and/or youth a primary source, write an essay arguing whether that piece of media refutes or reinforces racial stereotypes (or some of both). What direct and/or indirect messages do the selected media send about race? How do those messages compare to the racial messages sent by the media overall? Use specific examples from the media, as well as all relevant course materials and at least four outside scholarly sources to support your argument. 1. AT LEAST FOUR outside scholarly** sources In response to the essay question above, write an analytical and argumentative essay. Organize your paper around a well-reasoned argument and draw on all three types of sources to structure and support your argument. Be sure to provide examples and evidence, and always cite your sources. Please include a “References” page with complete citations Write as if for an audience of professional scholars. This should be formal academic writing, with full explanations, supporting evidence, and citations. As such, it should not include personal or anecdotal evidence, only scholarly analysis and evidence.
