The news are CNN and FOXX, the topic is about abortion. Goal- The purpose of this assignment is to aid students in analyzing sources. News or entertainment sources of information can come from very different sources. The goal of this assignment is to choose two news sources with seemingly different political views. (ie. MSNBC vs FOX). A great website you can use is Allsides.com (media sources). You can find left versus right viewpoints on tv, blogs, or any other media you find. If you choose to use an online news media source (ie. The Huffington Post) , it you can compare to a television source (ie. CNN), or you can compare the same type of Media Source (New York Times vs. Washington Post). Once you have chosen your two sources, tell me about them. Who owns this news source? What awards/accolades has this news source received? Is it credible? What types of criticisms or complaints has this news source received and from whom? Choose one topic that will likely be regularly covered from your news sources. (ie. The Russia/Collusion investigation). Explain your topic choice. Please choose a topic that is timely and relevant. Throughout the semester you will, using three different comparisons, each with different dates, explain how these news sources covered the topic. Was there a difference in approach, tone, or even topic? How do you explain the differences in coverage? Outlining argument (10 pts) Due: June 24 Goal- The purpose of this assignment is allow the students to practice outlining their argument and understanding the elements of a traditional essay. Using three different comparisons, each with different dates, explain how these news sources covered the topic. Was there a difference in approach, tone, or even topic? How do you explain the differences in coverage? Your outline should list the basic points of each of your three comparisons between news sources. Final argument construction (80 pts) Due: July 3 Goal- The purpose of this assignment is to allow the student to write a well formulated and organized essay. Specific emphasize should be placed on the students ability to synthesize information and draw conclusions.
