School to Prison Pipeline Paper
This module is an extension of topics learned last week (the school system and the criminal justice system). You will learn more about the school-to-prison pipeline (this isn’t a chapter in the book, so there are supplementary materials for you). The school-to-prison pipeline deferentially effects minority-status children, and represents an area where there is a need for social justice. To learn more, several learning tools are available to you including articles, videos and a radio segment. I HIGHLY encourage you and your group to do your own, independent research to supplement your learning. Write a paper identifying techniques that could be done to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline. Please include free or low-cost techniques, as well as more in-depth, systemic-level techniques that can lead to change. Please be creative and concise. More specifically, please address the following points in your paper: Explain the school-to-prison pipeline and why we should be concerned with this topic (2 point) Describe at least two free or low-cost solutions/techniques. I am interested in things that could be done today to address this topic (4 points) Describe systemic influences that have “caused” or contributed to the school to prison pipeline. Describe techniques or solutions that would disrupt the pipeline, and specify how you propose to disrupt the pipeline (4 points) ARTICLES YOU CAN USE: https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2015-07/ps-swh072215.php http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/538/is-this-working https://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/30/opinion/new-york-citys-school-to-prison-pipeline.html?_r=1 http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/crime/2015/02/decriminalization_why_reducing_the_punishments_for_misdemeanors_doesn_t.html https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/07/07/the-states-that-spend-more-money-on-prisoners-than-college-students/?utm_campaign=buffer&utm_content=buffer1df09&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_term=.0afba358a8ee https://www.aclu.org/issues/racial-justice/race-and-inequality-education/school-prison-pipeline?redirect=node/4223
