Diversity in the news.

July 29, 2024/0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Admin

The article you use should be 2019 or not more than 6 months.  Once you have found an appropriate article, please summarize its content. Then relate it explicitly to course readings with quotes and summaries from them; in essence, apply sociological concepts, theories, or research findings covered in this course to the news article thereby providing a sociological analysis. Your paper should be about 600 words long (not counting title and works cited section) and include the following: Introduction (50 to 100 words) which contains • a sentence about the topic/central idea of your article • the title of the article and the publication in which it appears • a short statement about why the information is important or useful • a mention of the sociological concepts or research findings you will apply. Body (450 to 500 words) which contains • a one-paragraph summary of the main points of your news article, including two short, direct or literal quotes from it (not just paraphrases). A summary should simply report on the contents of the news piece without including your own response to it. Summarize the main points in the same order in which they are presented in the article, using “signal” phrases that indicate that you are summarizing someone else’s work (e.g., The author begins by stating… She then argues… The author ends…). The two quotes from the article should be short (one or two sentences each) and be about the main points or controlling idea(s) of your news piece. • a second paragraph with a sociological analysis which applies at least two different concepts or research findings from course materials to the news item and provides a minimum of two applicable literal quotes from course readings (not audio or video materials), with source and page numbers indicated. Make sure to integrate your quotes well by providing transitions for them which explain how they are related to the argument you are making (e.g., Barkan makes a similar point when he states, “…”; The author defines [concept] as “…”; The course material on [concept] is especially applicable to the news item because…). In essence, be explicit about why you are using a particular quote in a particular context. Conclusion (50 to 100 words) which contains • a brief restatement of the main points of your paper • a closing statement/final thought about the topic
