Discuss the principles of effective communication with a range of patient groups. How is ‘effective communication’ defined for paramedics and why is it so important in their professional role? What are the main principles of effective communication? What patient groups will I talk about? Let your research guide you here – what different patient groups are talked about in the textbooks and literature? What is most important in terms of communication? What interests you? What will make for an interesting presentation? How can I compare and contrast communication across differing groups – what are the main issues that keep coming up? When you have selected a group to include in your range (whatever groups you decide on) try and boil it down to the key issues, so if someone asked you (e.g. ‘what are they key issues in communicating with that type of patients?), you could sum it up for them in a sentence or two. Have a think about how you would explain this to an audience, e.g: Paramedics need to communicate effectively with a range of patients because…. Some patient groups and situations present more of a challenge in terms of communication than others…. The main principles of communicating well with patients are… This varies when talking to…. 2. Discuss factors involved in effective and safe preliminary assessment and examination across a range of patient groups in the out of hospital environment, based on the best available evidence. For example:
What are the main factors in ensuring preliminary assessments/examinations work well and are safe for all involved? How is this the same/different across different patient groups? What range of patient groups will I talk about? What are they key issues I have learned from my research into this? Again, let your reading and research guide you – what is the ‘best evidence available’? idence. Look at 2-3 patient groups and how you would alter communication and assessment to ensure a safe approach to the patient assessment. Using evidence from journal articles. Please use Dementia, autism and the deaf as the communication groups.
