The Catholic Reformation
You will produce an annotated bibliography on one topic of your choice from the following list, and a critique of your sources. This assignment must include a minimum of 6 sources. Topics: The Catholic Reformation The Baroque Style Islamic, Chinese, Japanese dynasties and their art English Literature of the 17th Centuries The Scientific Revolution The European Enlightenment Of the 6 total sources, you must include 2 written sources, either a book or an article from a peer-reviewed journal and 4 web-sources. Only ONE of these web sources can be an encyclopedic site, e.g. Wikipedia, About.com, Britannica online, etc . . . (Please read the description for the essay exam to learn more about encyclopedic sources.) You are not allowed to use the textbook as a source. Each entry on your annotated Bibliography must contain: A brief summary of the contents in relation to the topic. Why is it relevant? A criticism and assessment of the sources. You should keep the following criteria in mind when making your assessment, especially those that are web-based: What is the purpose of the site? i.e., is it academic and historical? Is it a travel-site? Is it encyclopedic? How extensive is the site? What is the quality of the information included? Is it easy to navigate? Is there a clear list of sources, background of main author? Is there adequate Web-site upkeep? What is the quality of the bibliography and notation – does it seem to cite authoritative sources? Does it have links to other sites? Does it link to or use primary sources? A reflection on the source, i.e. how you might utilize this source, how its design, availability of info, etc . . . could work for you. Include criticism of the sources in your reflection and comments on its usefulness, i.e. is it suitable for an intro to the topic, or as general knowledge? If so, explain what features of the source qualify it as adequate for this purpose. Could it be used for collegiate research/term papers, highly specialized works such as doctoral theses or post graduate research? And, what details about this specialized source serve as the basis for your assessment on this issue? A brief statement that reflects on how your experience with different resources (librarians, Ask Academic, specific web searches, etc . . .) informed your choice on one or more of your sources, or your search for sources in general. You may try to consider how to find answers to simple questions like, “What is a primary source?” “How do I know if a source is credible?” “What defines a source as encyclopedic?” or even, “How do I begin?
