Refugees and Development Workers
You are to revise the Tutorial Facilitation Presentation and ensure it addresses the topic of Refugees and Development Workers. Please see the Unit Information and Learning Guide for further information about this assessment. the presentation can be submitted as a PowerPoint presentation. Students are required to facilitate one workshop tutorial during the study period. At the beginning of the study period, each student will be allocated one of the workshop topics. You will be required to prepare a 5-minute presentation using PowerPoint (with narration by audio or video), which will be posted to the discussion forum on the Monday of your allocated topic. Your presentations should draw on the unit readings. Students will also be required to facilitate discussion forum participation by each posting three questions based on their presentations and actively participating in the discussion generated. As more than one student may be presenting each week, facilitation of the tutorial will require some coordination with your peers. While your presentations should be developed and submitted individually, you are expected to work with the other students presenting in your allocated week to develop a well-thought-out set of discussion questions and avoid repetition. 17 • Workshop 1: Epidemics, Cultural and Institutional Responses • Workshop 2: Modern Slavery or Just Poor Working Conditions? • Workshop 3: Refugees and Development Workers • Workshop 4: Extractives Led Development – Tensions Between Immanent and Intentional Development • Workshop 5: Fair Trade as Ethical Development • Workshop 6: Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2030 • Workshop 7: Orphanage Tourism and Voluntourism This Assessment Task relates to the following Learning Outcomes: • Understand why international aid remains such a contested arena within international relations and such a problematic context for altruistic notions of help. • Learn to think critically and reflexively about recent debates informing development, the motivations behind international aid and the attendant difficulties in its delivery. • Examine the social outcomes that emerge from programs of international aid by looking beyond the rhetoric and developing an appreciation of the many background factors that influence these outcomes. • Actively participate in discussions concerning the nature of interactions between development agencies and target communities within the developed and the developing world and thereby gain detailed picture of what international aid entails General Presentation Information The presentation can be a video recording using YouTube or a PowerPoint presentation with audio and/or video added. YouTube Video You will need to create a private account on the free video hosting site YouTube (links for how to do this are included below). Then, once you have recorded your video, share the link in the discussion forum. Remember that video’s must still be accompanied by PowerPoint slides. You can make the recording on your phone, computer, tablet or camera. The presentation should be no more than 5 minutes.
