Flash fiction story of 750 -1,000 This essay should consider deeply and well a specific theme and share it meaningfully with readers. Flash Fiction Developmental Guidelines When you are writing this short story assignment, write with the plot diagram in mind as an outline. The diagram will be of especial use to you when you feel you have finished your story—use it as a test to determine if all the pieces of your puzzle are present and in place. Initial Conflict: make sure you have one, that it is compelling, and that it takes place very early in your developing tale. Remember you must quickly capture reader attention and interest…the shorter the work, the more quickly readers must buy in. Rising Action: having grabbed reader attention, you must maintain it. Structure your action so that conflicts continue to turn up the heat on the situation. Climax: insure that the climax resulting from the initial conflict and rising action is clear and powerful. Remember: the climax “answers the question” of the initial conflict. Falling Action: if it exists see that it contributes to the story significantly. Don’t write a compelling story only to have it mutter off in insubstantial author musing. Make sure your falling action is of appropriate length to wind down and wrap up your story. If you decide upon an ending that leaves audiences speculating, do so only after having given us enough information to logically and intelligently fill in the blank spots. Lastly, once you have proofread with the plot diagram serving as a tool of evaluation, read also to insure all the elements of fiction are represented. Are your characters as developed as they need be and is interaction between them meaningful? Do scene and summary achieve balance and do they feed off of and into one another? Is your theme easily identifiable and focus upon it maintained? Is your point of view consistent?
