Environmental Sociology

–Chapters 1-6 & 13Chapter 1:Please detail two environmental problems we’re currently facing that result from our reliance on automobiles. Please describe the extent of the problem (citing specific facts and figures from your textbook) and describe how our reliance on automobiles contributes to these problems.Chapter 2:Choose two theories from the chapter on Consumption and Materialism that help explain why we continue to rely heavilyon automobiles despite theenvironmentalharm you just described. Please be sure to describe each theory in detail, including citing the theorist who proposed it. Then, explain how this theory applies to our societal reliance on automobiles.Chapter 3:Describe two concepts or theories from Chapter 3, Money and Markets, that help explain our societal reliance on automobiles. Again, be sure to describe each concept/theory in detail, including citing the theorist who proposedit (when applicable). Explain how it compels us to continue relying on automobiles, despite their harmful environmental consequences.Chapter 4:Now describe two concepts or theories from Chapter 4, Technology and Science, that help explain our societal reliance on automobiles. As you did for Chapter 3, be sure to describe each concept/theory in detail, including, when applicable, citing the theorist who proposed it. Explain how it compels us to continue relying on automobiles, despite their harmful environmental consequences.Chapter 5:Explain how population growth is likely to affect our worldwide reliance on automobiles. Use one of the theories presented in Chapter 5 to describe the likely trajectory of population growth in the next few decades (i.e. where you think we’llsee the most growth, how much growth we will see, etc.). Then describe how the societies experiencing growthin the scenario you outlined are likely to use automobiles. Be sure you cite information from the textbook to support your arguments in this section of the exam, including presenting specific data to back up your claims and tying each of yoursuppositions to specific theories/conceptspresented in the textbook.Chapter 6:How does automobile usage contribute to “invironmental” problems, in addition to the environmental problems you outlined in your response to Chapter 1’s question? In your response, be sure to define environmental justice and the “invironment”, as described by the authors of your textbook. Draw on examples from the textbook, as well as other course materials (i.e.discussion assignments), to describe at least one way the “bads” associated with automobiles usage are unequally distributed across society.
