WESTERN FEMINISM
1) Respond to the following question (there is no word limit but you should write at least a decent paragraph): The readings for today define “transnational feminism” as a search for building political unities among women around the world (solidarity-based alliances across borders) while recognizing differences and inequalities among women. In the 1st reading, Lee and Shaw argue that many women in the Global North (in the west) have greater access to education and communication technologies and more opportunities to participate in global social justice movements. Western women benefit from the increased status of their countries and often enjoy higher living standards, opportunities to travel, and increased participation and voice in world conferences. Therefore, they have a privileged voice in defining the key issues of feminism and setting the agenda for a global women’s movement. This is why they criticize the notion of “universal sisterhood” and certain forms of “western feminism.” In light of this introduction, briefly discuss whether Lee and Shaw would agree or disagree with the idea that transnational feminism is a hopeless project doomed to fail because women are too different from each other and because of those differences they cannot come together to pursue any solidarity-based activisms. In other words, do they argue that global feminism is possible or not? (If I “like” your post, you get full credit: 5 points) 2) WRITE a discussion question. In your question, focus only on Tripp’s article that provides solutions for transnational feminist activists to engage in more empowering (and locally harmless) feminist activisms. That is, ask a specific question about her recommendations to western feminists intervening in gender issues taking place in other countries.
