The agents of socialization are family, education, religion, peer group, work, mass media, and social media. • From the videos, discuss how the mass media and social media may contribute to an institutionalized system of unequal socialization experiences. The three videos provide very good examples of how the mass media and social media create socialization experiences for young children and students to internalize and acquire their consumer, gender, and social class identities. Furthermore, the creation of these socialization experiences are reinforced by other agents of socialization such as the family and the education or school system. • List two people or persons who played important roles in shaping your life. Describe their contributions to your socialization experiences. • Select one socialization theory that addresses the development of a social self. The socialization theories discussed in chapter four-socialization are Mead’s “The Self”, Cooley’s “Looking-Glass Self”, The Situated Self, Jean Piaget’s Cognitive Development, Lawrence Kohlberg’s Moral Development, Carol Gilligan Gender Socialization, and Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Stages. Discuss the importance of this socialization theory in explaining a very important social event that helped you acquire a positive socialization skill or trait. • Do you think the agents of socialization in society contribute to America’s social class system?
