Do you need an authoritarian political system to get economic development?
In a well structured and well argued essay of 6-8 pages answer the following question. Reading the case study on China in the text along with supplemental readings that will be posted shortly will be a major help. For the developing world, the first two decades of the 21st century seem to offer two competing political/economic development models. One model based on democratic institutions and capitalism (India, Chile, U.S.A.) and a second model based on Authoritarian political control and managed or state directed capitalism as practiced by PRC. Given the similar (up until recently) development inertia of both nations, having a colonial past and dealing with mass poverty and inequality, which developmental model is most appropriate for the developing world? Do you need an authoritarian political system to get economic development? Or does more “Western” style neoliberal model have the best shot at providing both political stability and economic growth? For this assignment when you site sources please use MLA style. MLA style/guides are easily available online if needed. Over the next few days I will be posting some additional materials on both India and China to help you answer the question.
