PURPOSE

The main purposes of this assignmentare to: (1) familiarize you with the concepts and strategies of international development (2) help you become an expert on the foreign aid situation in a country of your choosing (3) develop your critical thinking skills in the context of international developmentand rationales for foreign assistanceEXPECTATIONSThis assignment is divided into fourparts. Part one explores the countryof your choice, its level of development,and issues of poverty. Part two addressesthe causesof its underdevelopment or poverty.Part three examines the aid situation in this country, including types of foreign assistance (e.g. humanitarian,ODA). Part fourshould consist of your analysisof the development initiatives/foreign aidand requires you to submit your opinion for the future development of this country. Your analysis should be 6-8 pages (double-spaced) excluding references. You should incorporate the class reading material and any other relevant material you find and cite it correctly in APA format. There is a list of other useful resources below whichwill help you find legitimate, relevant information. You may use material directly from your assignments this semester, as long as the information is integrated into the paper and answers the questions.Youshould address and develop the following components:PART ONE: COUNTRY PROFILEGive a briefoverview of the country and be sure to answer the questions below. •What are the indicators of poverty, development, and inequality in this country. Be sure to include the HDI, GINI,and another other indicators you find relevant. •Is thiscountry considered an LDC by the United Nations? •Is this country a corenation or a periphery nation, according to dependency theory?•How does thiscountry compare to other nations in the region?•What are the historical trends of development?•Where is the country at onRostow’s Model of the Stages of Economic Growth?•Has this country’s development level changed over time, or remained relatively constant?•Where is this country at in terms of progress toward reaching the Sustainable Development Goals? 2PART TWO: DETERMINANTS OF DEVELOPMENT•Which approachto defining poverty (i.e. monetary, capabilities, or inequality)is most applicableto measuring poverty in this country? •What has caused developmental change or lack of change (e.gtechnological innovation, natural disaster, political change)?•What are the causes of poverty and inequality in this region (e.g. post-colonialism, exploitation by core nations, geographic determinism etc.)?PART THREE: FOREIGN ASSISTANCE•What type of foreign assistance (e.g. humanitarian, ODA)is being given to this country?•What types projects are being funded and what do they hope to accomplish? PART FOUR: ANALYSIS & CONCLUSION •How effective are the development initiatives in this country? •Should development/humanitarianassistancecontinue as planned, or should there be a course correction? •Do you see this country meeting the Sustainable Development Goalsby 2030?•If you were hired as a development consultant, what recommendations would you give to those in control of foreign assistance?•What stand out in your mind from this semester?
