Program Brief: PEARLS

Paper details *I will upload the same instructions because it will be easier to read and understand. Also read the Op-Ed assignment I uploaded so you have an idea of what I am talking about.* Building on the Op-Ed assignment (I will upload that for you to read), prepare a program brief addressed to a state elected or appointed official (Barbara A. Favola – state senator) in which you will provide: 1. A brief overview of the program and its purpose o Program to Encourage Active, Rewarding Lives for Seniors (PEARLS)  Focused around well-being and mental health of older adults  Improved quality of life  Encourage older adults to maintain healthy relationships with others by helping equip older adults with the skills and confidence to do so.  This lowers stress and symptoms of those who experience depression, leading to a happier, healthier, and longer-lived life. o Still be sure to elaborate and discuss an overview of the program and its purpose 2. Discussion on competing perspectives on this program and whose interests are reflected in it, including who benefits and who does not o Discuss competing perspectives.  Goes back to this idea of stigma and poor connection between young adults and older adults. Young adults and middle-aged adults feel like they bear the costs. They typically don’t want their tax money going towards something they don’t have an immediate benefit from. • People stigmatize a group (aging population) we ourselves will be a part of in the future  There is an underdeveloped appreciation for the aging community, which means there is little relationship that encourages those to help support services and funding for aging programs like PEARLS. o It essentially reflects everyone’s interests; however, those 65+ years of age are the particular focus. o Everyone will benefit at some point, but those 65 years and older get the immediate benefits. o Everyone pays in the beginning but gets to experience the benefits later. o There is no one who won’t benefit from this program, it is just a matter of time. 3. A critical discussion on the limitations of this program in terms of promoting social justice and cross-generational interdependence o Funding is a huge limitation o Lack of representation; missing a generational voice 4. Recommendation(s) for policy/program changes that will promote social justice and multigenerational interdependence o Programs that promote intergeneration connections by offering the space and activities to do so o Policies that include a secured funding o Changing programs into entitlements so that young adults would be more willing to fund if they believe they will also benefit from the same program when they are 65+ years of age. Policy briefs/memos must be concisely written and present a compelling case. Although, this is not as in-depth as a policy analysis, you can use a policy analysis framework as a guide while writing your policy brief. This analysis requires the use of reliable resources (articles, government documents, interviews, practicum agency policies and procedures, etc.) that are recent. General: – Language/terms in reference to 65+: older adults, aging population -This is for a social work class, so keep the perspective, and lens of that in mind -DO NOT PLAGERIZE. Cite all your quotes, paraphrases, etc. -Do NOT give me a paper back without checking the grammar and proper sentence structure.
