Paper details Writing Assignment #3 Writing Assignment: Color and Composition in Art: Using Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Gauguin, Matisse or Morisot, Cassatt, Matisse, Kirchner OR Kandinsky Select and write about one of these artists’ uses of color and composition in an essay that compares and contrasts three of his/her paintings. Make sure to pick at least one from the book to compare; find a second and third image from the textbook or another source. Write and DESCRIBE the work. Of the 1500 words, attempt to have around 1250 words be your own eyes and mind in the form of description and the other 250 can come from quotes from Getlein. There is no need for other sources. ** YOU MUST USE quotes from the textbook!!! FOCUS on quoting the elements of art such as color, line, and composition. **** As you compare and contrast the paintings, consider the following questions: * What is the artist trying to convey in his/her work? * What are the dominant colors? * How do his/her color choices affect the mood of the piece? * How does he/she use complementary color schemes to heighten emotion and create meaning? * How does the artist use other compositional elements such as line, texture, shape and light, etc … to create meaning and to reinforce his or her color choices? USE YOUR EYES. TELL ME WHAT YOU SEE. VISUALLY UNPACK THE ARTWORK. Develop your ideas and back them up by integrating the concepts you learned in GETLEIN—especially around elements of art. Do not focus on their lives. Focus on the artwork. This assignment is about you being able to visually unpack an artwork—it is not a research paper. You may also do additional research on the artist you chose but make sure you cite your sources. Make sure to include images of the artworks you discuss in the paper. A full bibliography is required for this paper. I highly suggest that you could consider doing a mindmap for each image and then discuss them in your paper.
